Lost Souls And Lunatics

An authentic look at an extraordinary East End life. This is a semi-autobiographical work from author, photographer, poet and award winning playwright Johnnie Quarrell.

Lost Souls and Lunatics was written, in part, as a response to the massacre of 129 children in Peshwar. This and subsequent attacks on children released haunting memories of being bombed in London. And though painful, the author wanted to re-visit the darker aspects of coming to manhood with war, poverty and prison as unlovely backdrops.

Actor Billy Colvill and Johnnie Quarrell met for months to explore the possibilities of taking these dark but funny experiences and stories to the stage. Lil Warren was brought on board as Director having worked with Colvill on his play Shepherd’s Pie and Plato’s Cave. This creative team are all from the East End. This shared background has produced a genuinely accurate portrayal and telling of London working class stories.

Billy Colvill has worked as an actor everywhere from the Old Half Moon to the National Theatre, he is also a playwright. Lil Warren has been creating for live performance for twenty years. She survived being a stand-up in Glasgow and most recently directed Blackout by Davey Anderson at Soho Theatre.
