Pattern Cutting Introduction

Led by Yasar Spörndli, creative pattern cutter for Mary Katrantzou, participants will cover the basic rules of flat pattern cutting. The course focuses on creating a block to your own measurements and using this block to create a dress pattern. This process will include dart manipulations and balance lines.

You will be taught how to:

- adapt a pattern to your own measurements
- use a block to design and create a dress pattern
- manipulate darts with cut and slash technique
- identify grain lines, add notches and seam allowances
- sew and fit a toile

Demonstrations will use size 10 fashion blocks, but other standard sizes will be available to work with.

Level: No pattern cutting experience is necessary. This course is perfect for a beginner wanting to learn the principles as well as anyone who may have dressmaking experience but who now wants to experiment with their own patterns. Participants must be able to use a sewing machine.

Equipment: Calico and specialist equipment is provided. You will need to bring metric tape measure, fabric shears, paper shears, fine steel pins, pencil and lead pencils (hb), rubber.
