Jewellwey by Hand in the 21st Century

Go into the deep with London-based jewellery designer Alex Monroe. Discuss the craft of making jewellery by hand in the 21st century, as well as the inspiration behind his new ‘Beyond The Sea’ nautical collection launched at Liberty this year.

Strongly inspired by nature and British eccentricity, Alex Monroe has been designing and making jewellery for over 25 years. Growing up in the Suffolk countryside, since an early age Alex Monroe has had a great love for the natural world. Nature is a strong theme throughout his work and creations such as the bumble bee necklace have earned iconic status. Working with precious materials, his designs are elegant with a whimsical charm and the new nautical collection reflects this unmistakable style, with gold-plated ships, anchors and entwining ropes reminiscent of the seaside.

With a boutique close to Bermondsey Street, Alex Monroe joins us for the evening to reveal how he makes all of his original designs by hand using traditional jewellery making techniques. From initial sketches to the workbench, working directly with silver enables him and his team to achieve the high levels of detail and texture associated with his designs.
