Introduction to Shoe Design

This popular course returns to the Fashion and Textile Museum as part of the Rayne Shoes for Stars learning programme. Aimed at budding young footwear designers or fashion enthusiasts wanting to extend their portfolios, the course explores all things ‘shoe’ related. From the history of stilettos and platforms to the role of the designer in the footwear industry in the 21st century.

The course will include talks, films and practical sessions aimed at equipping you with the skills necessary to produce your own illustrated shoe designs. Initial sketching and design development techniques will be explored along with technical ‘specification’ drawing necessary for product development.

You shall research how a professional designer puts a range together, beginning with analysing the catwalk trends, the worldwide trade and buying fairs and all the crucial show calenders. The course will then explore the work of famous footwear designers and consider the influence of celebrity style.

An individual portfolio project will be set for each student to reflect their personal interests and there will be plenty of practical illustration and design exercises covering all types of footwear.
