Songlines and Soundcrash are delighted to announce that the inaugural Songlines Music Awards ceremony will take place at Electric Brixton in London on Saturday, October 20.
Hosted by Cerys Matthews and presenting all nine individual category winners including the four winners still to be announced: Best Artist, Best Group, Newcomer and World Pioneer.
Vieux Farka Toure
Often referred to as 'The Hendrix of the Sahara', Vieux Farka Toure was born in Niafunke, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Toure, who died in 2006. A captivating brew of fervent melody, buzzing guitars and timeless Malian soul from one of today's most celebrated African guitarists, with a unique style incorporating rock, Latin music and African blues.

Mokoomba brings audiences an electrifying blend of Afro-fusion and tantalizing traditional Tonga rhythms. The name Mokoomba stems from the deep respect that the Tonga people have for the Zambezi River and for the vibrant life that it brings to their music and culture. This exciting Tonga group from Zimbabwe certainly has a unique sound that is set to take the world music scene by storm!

Warsaw Village Band
Combining enthusiasm, passion, socio-political issues and attitude, these six young musicians present a unique sound that incorporates strings, furious drums, trance, improvisation, experimentation and elements of roots music. Winners of Best Newcomer at the 2004 BBC World Music Awards.

Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino
Formed in 1975, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino is regarded as Italy’s leading and longest-standing traditional music ensemble. The group hails from the Salento, the heel of the Italian boot, in Puglia. Italy's fascinating blend of tradition and modernity comes together. The seven-piece band, accompanied by a dancer, lead a new wave of young performers re-inventing Southern Italy's pizzica musical and dance traditions for today's global audience. CGS shows are full of energy, passion, rhythm and mystery, bringing their audience from the past into modernity, and back.

Cerys Matthews first achieved fame as lead singer of the group Catatonia. She had an equally successful parallel solo career duetting with Tom Jones on the perennial classic Baby It's Cold Outside and with Space on The Ballad of Tom Jones, plus three critically acclaimed solo albums Cockahoop, Never Said Goodbye and Don't Look Down. Nowadays you're more likely to find her hosting radio shows on both BBC 6Music (Sunday mornings) and BBC Radio 2 (Monday evenings).
