Claire Tomalin is the renowned biographer of many outstanding literary figures: Samuel Pepys, Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen, Katherine Mansfield, Mary Wollstonecraft, Charles Dickens (and his ‘invisible woman’, Nelly Ternan). She is a former literary editor of the Sunday Times and the New Statesman. John Carey is Emeritus Professor of English Literature at Oxford, has been chief book reviewer for the Sunday Times, has twice chaired the Booker Prize Committee and chaired the judging panel for the first Man Booker International Prize, and is the author of a scintillating memoir, The Unexpected Professor, about his life in literature, an acclaimed Book of the Week on Radio 4.
