SOAS Concert Series
Belgian flute maker and musician Winne Clement is a man following his own intuition, passionate about wood and sound. When he was in his twenties, Winne heard the sound of the ney flute on the radio, and later the fujara - a remarkable overtone flute from Slovakia.
As well as being attracted to the deeply moving, haunting sound of the fujara, the rudimentary honesty of making music using only one's breath struck him. Winne performs regularly in Europe and overseas, with an emphasis on improvisation. As a maker of his own instruments with Fujara Flutes, Winne has a deep connection to the sounds he has 'sculpted' and searched for.
For this unique concert, Winne Clement will give a series of improvised performances on fujara, smaller overtone flutes, and kaval - an end-blown flute traditionally played throughout the Armenia, Balkans and Turkey - as well as double and hybrid flutes.
The evening will start with a short film called ‘The Birth of a Flute’, tracing every step in the making of one of Winne’s flutes, from the harvesting of wood to the carving of his signature.
