Miss Julie (by August Strindberg)

Young socialite Miss Julie, raised by a misandrist mother and a misogynist father, struggles to find her place and sense of purpose in life. After breaking up with her latest fiancé she amuses herself by attending the servants’ ball on Midsummer’s Eve and takes a particular liking to handsome valet Jean, himself engaged to the cook Christine. They soon get into a series of dangerous mind-, power- and sexual games as things quickly spiral out of control.

The production is a contemporary take on Strindberg’s masterpiece, written in 1888, exploring gender, class, lust and privilege. It caused a scandal when first produced and has been hugely popular ever since for its viscerally honest portrait of the class system and human sexuality. Who in the battle of the sexes and classes has truly the upper hand? And how far will people go in the ultimate power struggle?
