Saltash Bells

Tonight Stanko and his New York Quartet present a mix of soulful free ballads and pure boppish energy, inspired by and dedicated to the memory of Polish poet, essayist and Nobel Laureate Wis?awa Symborska.

Composer and multi-instrumentalist John Surman is a key figure in a generation of European jazz musicians who expanded the international horizons of jazz during the last three decades of the twentieth century. A stalwart of the ECM record label, and long acknowledged as an improviser of world class, he is composer of a body of work that extends far beyond the perceived boundaries of the jazz repertoire.

Saltash Bells, is inspired by the West Country of his English childhood, memories of special places – and sounds. The title track refers to the echoes of bell ringing from Saltash church resounding around the Tamar River valley, at the border of Cornwall and Devon. Whistman's Wood, meanwhile, evokes the mysterious petrified forest of Dartmoor ... And so it goes, ancient haunts inspiring vivid new music.
