Session Seven

For the finale of Sounds and Visions, Max Richter is joined by Chineke! Orchestra – conducted by Fawzi Haimor – for a performance of his Waltz With Bashir score, alongside a screening of the film.

The Golden Globe-winning animated film is almost like a documentary in format. It follows creator Ari Goldman’s attempts to recount memories of his time as a young soldier in the Israeli army, piecing together painful experiences from the 1982 Lebanon War. And like the film itself, Richter’s score is haunted and hallucinatory, moving between Baroque keyboard, skittering electronics and mournful string movements like scenes in a fever dream.

Performing it is the Chineke! Orchestra, Europe's first professional orchestra to be made up of majority black and minority ethnic (BME) musicians. Founded by double bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE, FRAM, who says: ‘my aim is to create a space where BME musicians can walk on stage and know that they belong, in every sense of the word. If even one BME child feels that their colour is getting in the way of their musical ambitions, then I hope to inspire them, give them a platform, and show them that music, of whatever kind, is for all people.’
