Barbican Presents - Les Indes Galantes
When Jean-Phillippe Rameau unveiled his first opera in Paris in 1733, he was immediately hailed as the greatest opera composer since Lully and the saviour of France's ambitions to lead the international opera scene. Two years later Rameau presented a curious portrait of love, presenting four stories in four exotic lands and titled Les Indes Galantes.
The Parisians were baffled and shocked, but just six months later every tune in the opera had been stolen and parodied, and the work was recognized as the strange but alluring masterpiece that it is. Music that strikes out with emboldened harmonies and thrusting, dancing rhythms, the work is here performed in concert by specialist French group Les Talens Lyriques.
