Barbican Presents - Barbican Britten: Bostridge Sings Our Hunting Fathers: Britten Sinfonia, Britten Sinfonia Voices, Ian Bostridge, Gwynne Howell, Neal Davies, Peter Coleman-Wright
When Benjamin Britten first experienced the strange rituals of a Noh play, his reaction was to collapse in giggles. But he soon saw the dramatic and musical potential of this very distinct form of Japanese drama, and he used its clipped ceremony and masked interplay for his monastic East Anglian drama Curlew River – a piece shot through with the strange, exotic sounds of bells, untuned drums, organ and chamber ensemble.
For John Bridcut, curator of the Barbican's Britten study day, Curlew River is a 'once heard never forgotten' work. Ian Bostridge joins a specialist cast, the Britten Sinfonia and director Neita Jones for a new look at one of Britten's most fascinating creations.
This event takes place at Barbican Centre, which has achieved Silver Status for disabled access from Attitude Is Everything.
Britten Sinfonia is one of the world's most celebrated and pioneering ensembles. The orchestra is an Associate Ensemble at the Barbican, has residencies in Norwich, Cambridge and Brighton, and a chamber series at Wigmore Hall. Britten Sinfonia enjoys a growing international profile, and is frequently heard on disc, BBC Radio 3 and commercial radio.
'But as always with this orchestra there was more to savour than just stellar performance. The programme was ingeniously shaped' (Ivan Hewett, The Daily Telegraph)
'The playing was marked by the kind of luminous and infectious beauty that only comes from a true marriage of mastery and love' (The Times0
'The UK's most consistently dynamic chamber ensemble' (The New Statesman).
