Ben Palmer • conductor
A man and a woman walk through a forest on a moonlit night. She confesses to her new lover a dark secret: that she is carrying the child of another man. Moved by the beauty of the sky and the strength of their feelings for each other, he tells her they will raise the child as his own. "Look," he exclaims, "how brightly the universe shines!", and their lives are transfigured by the night.
For the opening concert of OSP's 2016/17 season, Schoenberg's richly chromatic 1899 tone poem Verklärte Nacht, inspired by Richard Dehmel's poem of the same name, is preceded by the prelude to Strauss's final opera, Capriccio, and the mesmerising rhythmic tapestry of John Adams's Shaker Loops.
