Melange

Leader Shirley Smart formed the Melange ensemble after spending 10 years in Jerusalem playing and studying the music of the region.

This stunning world music ensemble brings together popular North African rai and chaabi songs, Gnawa music of the South Moroccan desert, exotic Middle Eastern and Turkish melodies and improvisations, lively Balkan dances, Central Asian folk melodies, across to the fiery Tango of Argentina and the street music of Brazilian choro infused with jazz-inspired improvisation into their own unique take on traditional repertoire.

Their last gig at the Vortex was described by a regular attendee as "one of the best musical experiences I have ever had." It really was stirring and beautiful - do see them now in an intimate venue while you still can!
