The Aleph

The Aleph evoke music from the distant past to the far future to create a spectral, alternative present.

Comprising Benjamin Fair and Jonathan Hering, The Aleph has performed in venues such as Tate Britain, Beacons Festival, Liverpool's Kazimier club, the University of Liverpool and Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry.

Their original film & music work The Good Eater – made in collaboration with filmmaker Craig Sinclair - explores concepts of childhood, memory and the filters that we apply with retrospection. Summoning the particular dread that children can attach to the seemingly most innocuous elements of everyday life, the work probes the complex fears that lurk inside us all.

In 2013 The Aleph made creative explorations in Cumbria's Wray Castle and it's surrounding woodland. Using only two voices and four cassette players, the duo created an array of vocal music – choral arrangements, fugues, recordings of recordings of recordings – all of which both responded to the surroundings and used the very physical and acoustic properties of the setting to influence the music - dark, sinister, unexpected, child-like, and within it a thread that can be traced back to earlier times.

For The Dark, Dark Wood, The Aleph will again create multi-layered, responsive music using only their voices – live and recorded. This music will be created specifically for the Kinicho Cosmos immersive sound-system.

The Aleph will also perform in the space on 9th December. This performance will feature a live realisation of their multiple-cassette vocal music, alongside an updated performance of their music and film piece The Good Eater – itself a work rich in mystery, darkness, and dread.
