Adagio
Programme:
Barber – Adagio
Mahler – Adagietto from Symphony No.5
Barber – Violin Concerto
Dvorak – Symphony No.7
Conductor: Sergej Bolkhovets
Violin: Sophie Rosa
The critic Alexander Morin said of Barber’s Adagio that 'it rarely leaves a dry eye' which may explain why it was broadcast over radio and television when the deaths of both Franklyn D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy were announced. Do not put the tissues away quite yet though because Mahler’s gorgeous Adagietto from his Fifth Symphony, as featured in the film Death in Venice, will have you reaching for them all over again.
To brighten up proceedings LMO welcomes for the first time prize-winning violinist Sophie Rosa to play Barber’s lyrical and virtuosic Violin Concerto. Its moto perpetuo finale is a sure fire antidote to any adagio! Finally, Dvorak’s Symphony No.7 is equally tuneful with lots of Czech melodies and harmonic invention. As musicologist and Dvorak specialists John Clapham puts it, 'without doubt it must surely be Dvo?ák's greatest symphony', and who are we to disagree!
