RAF Swing Wing
Royal Air Force Swing Wing is the eighteen-piece Big Band from The Band of the RAF College based at RAFC Cranwell in Lincolnshire.
Big Bands have been a fundamental part of RAF Music since the Second World War and RAF Swing Wing continues this legacy today. The band was formed in 1989 and has established a reputation for excellence in this genre. The band has performed in not only some of the finest concert halls in the UK but all over the world, most notably opening the Sydney Tattoo in 2010.
RAF Swing Wing have had the pleasure of working with many of Britain’s most illustrious musical figures including vocalists Matt Ford and Lee Gibson, celebrated jazz saxophonist Tommy Whittle, trombonist Gordon Campbell, outstanding trumpet players such as Andy Greenwood and Mike Lovatt and the former BBC Big Band drummer Mike Smith.
The band’s repertoire ranges from all the legendary Big Band music such as Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Buddy Rich through to more contemporary sounds. The band includes two fine vocalists which allow the ensemble to perform some of the finest vocal charts from the Big Band era.
