With Carnival in Rio the week before, we thought we’d do a Brazilian Beats session for the first Sunday Joint of March featuring two great Leeds bands mixing up samba/bossa nova beats with jazz, soul, funk and afrobeats. Plus we have a Leeds Latin music/Brazilian beats DJ legend playing some classic Brazilian vinyl cuts early doors.
Suéli Gil is an Portuguese singer based in Leeds who loves Brazilian music. She started singing in the church choir as a school child and then with bands at university. In 2012 she released her first EP of original songs titled “Girassol”, produced by top Brazilian guitarist/producer Tuniko Goulart. She moved to Leeds in 2013 and quickly started playing duo gigs (vocals/guitarist) in Brazilian restaurants around the north of England. In 2015, the duo became a quintet performing at venues like 7Arts and The Wardrobe and appearing at big festivals like Brazilica (Liverpool) and Vamos (Leeds). Suéli’s music is a fusion of Brazilian bossa/funky samba and Angolan/Cape Verdean sounds (her parents are Angolan). With a great band of young Leeds musicians (Tim Cook drums, Lenynn Sampedro bass, Phillipp Grobe keys, Grifton Forbes Amos trumpet, Jahleel Balogun sax and special guest Jo Kahlsi on Dhol drum), they bring sunshine to any venue they play. Tonight they launch Sueli’s new single “Toca Samba”.
Support band are a new big all-star Leeds Brazilian fusion band called Botoga Deli led by Mamilah/Mabgate Swingers Party guitarist Ed Allen. They’re so new this is their debut gig. They play original music fusing soul, jazz and funk with Brazilian beats as well as some material by Brazilian music legends Arthur Verocai, Hermeto Pascoal and Pedro Santos. The line-up is a who’s who of the current young jazz rebels scene in Leeds : Ed Allen guitar (Mamilah/Mabgate Swingers Party), Jasmine Whalley alto sax (Jasmine/Têtes de Pois), Dan Coulthurst trumpet (Mamilah), Alex Fisher baritone sax (Mabgate Swingers Party), Nico Widdowson keys (Mabgate Swingers Party/MDVLNS), Frazer Kerslake bass (Morpher), Richard Moulton drums (Mabgate Swingers Party), Greg Burns percussion (Necktr) and George Hall percussion (Têtes de Pois/Skwid Ink). Heavy line-up making heavy Brazilian music inspired fusion.
Early doors, Leeds’ original Latin/Brazilian/World music don DJ Lubi (DIG Family/Straight No Chaser Magazine/RE:SOUL) will be playing some of his rare and classic Bossa/MPB/samba rock/samba funk records from the 60s to the 80s, lovely deep grooves with added crackles.
Doors 8:00pm. Live music 8:30pm (Botoga Deli) and 9:30pm (Suéli Gil & Friends). DJ Lubi before and between live sets and Sunday Joint DJs after the live music until late. Entry is as always Free.
