Agbeko are Manchester’s 11 piece juggernaut of afrobeat fusion that bring together their love of the original artform, created by the masters Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, meshed with the sounds of jazz, soul, funk and psyche. In three years they’ve gone from local heroes at home to nationally acclaimed artists hitting all the right clubs/venues and festivals UK wide and beyond. After 2 singles (one of them 7? vinyl for the cool Stutter & Twitch label), and an EP, they are now releasing their debut album “D.O.D. (Death Of Discourse)” in early March and kicking off the 8 day UK promo tour tonight at “Sunday Joint” at the Hifi Club.

With their kicking brass, rhythmic attack and blazing solos, they fire up any live show they play. They also bring a political awareness to their music, speaking out against irresponsible leadership and humanitarian crises while promoting fairness and acceptance, just as the musicians who inspire them have done previously. With their strong music and a message, they’ve rocked spots across the UK and beyond including festivals like Boomtown, Green Man, Soundwave (Croatia), Wilderness, Meadows In The Mountains and Linecheck (Milan). Another great band in the vibrant UK afro-fusion scene that includes Onipa, KOG & The Zongo Brigade, Afriquoi, Mansion Of Snakes, Dele Sosimi and London Afrobeat Collective, it’s great to have Agbeko back at Sunday Joint to launch their debut album and kick off their UK promo tour.

Continuing with our ongoing collaboration with Leeds College Of Music, tonight’s support act is one of the rising stars of Leeds’ vibrant neo-soul/hip-hop jazz jazz scene. Singer Shaniah Williams has already appeared at venues across the city as lead singer of The Space Antics. Now she’s started her own solo project performing her original compositions and reworks of her favourite artists’ songs. With her amazing voice and strong stage presence, she’s definitely one young Leeds artist to watch out for in 2020.
