Armoured Angels

Display of armoured angel wings, created by pupils of Gawber Primary School, Barnsley.

Inspired by the highly decorative Earl of Southampton’s armour on display at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, and the painting ‘Saint Michael triumphant over the devil with the donor Antonio Juan’, pupils of Gawber Primary School produced armoured angels wings in the Mannerist style.

Reflecting ideas of good and evil, as well as of armour as protection and decoration, the embossed copper wings have recently been on display at the National Gallery as part of the Take One Picture competition.
