Sacred Music For Good Friday

St Peter’s Singers present music by Brahms and Vaughan Williams.

The first half concludes with Vaughan Williams’ Romance for Violin and Orchestra: The Lark Ascending inspired by a poem by George Meredith. The soloist will be the founder leader of the Orchestra of Opera North, David Greed to whom will be extended a very welcome by his many Minster friends.

The concert unfolds from two glorious Brahms Motets: Warum ist das Licht gegebent and the Geistliches Lied. The main work, Brahms’s German Requiem, sets scriptural texts from both new and old testaments.
Among its six movements are featured solos for soprano and baritone singers as well as particularly favourite stand alone movements often heard separately; of these, undoubtedly the famous famous is a setting of the opening of Psalm 84 – How lovely are Thy dwellings fair.
