Freespace

Dundee-based Freespace started out when science writer David Darling released his first album, Songs of the Cosmos, in March 2014, heavily influenced by many of the ideas from his books. An author for more than 30 years of books on everything from life in the universe to megacatastrophes, David began to channel more of his efforts into music and first teamed up with bassist Emrah Polat, who's played with various metal and rock bands in Turkey. Matthew Gaughan then joined on drums, followed by Euan Smith on lead guitar. The band plays an eclectic mix of original and cover material, leaning more toward the original as time goes on. Their appearance at Backstage will see the first public performance of their new song, Voyager - about a spacecraft that's carrying music to the stars.
