Story telling is what this wonderful hour of music is all about. This event is suitable for all the family.

First, the comedy and high jinks: Cage kicks off the proceedings with his unique take on the words “Once upon a time…”, before we segue into the whacky world of Cathy Berberian’s Stripsody. Inspired by cartoon strips, this a fast-moving collage of mini-scenes including a stand-off between a cat and a dog, a girl impatiently waiting for her late boyfriend, a police drama, Tarzan in the trees… Great fun.

Right after it comes a piece whose title you may not recognise, Gesprochene Musik, though it contains the famous Geographical Fugue. Then one that opens “Trinidad! And the big Mississippi…”. To close, we have David Lang’s beautiful and moving re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl. This piece has caught the imagination of audiences worldwide and has been performed over 300 times.
