Three generations of great quartet composers – three masterworks. Mozart on irresistibly up-beat, youthful form contrasts with Beethoven and Mendelssohn who explore darker, dramatic emotions. For Mendelssohn, it was the loss of his beloved sister that brought a powerful sorrow into his music. Beethoven’s shortest quartet is also the one that was most special to him, and he himself called it ‘Serioso’, believing that it should only be played in an intimate setting – perfect for East Neuk!
