Daughter, Daughter - Before I Met You

Daughter, Daughter peers through the keyhole into the pervasive experience of fatherhood. A split moment and the world is unrecognisable. Without warning, everything takes a new meaning. The depth of responsibility, love, guilt and lack of control. The anxiety and the pride. A feeling of being reborn and wondering – how did I live before?

Inspired by real stories from men and their daughters, this show is a highly physical and emotive new dance show about fatherhood. Joseph Toonga shines a stark and honest light on this profound experience through his abstract and signature hip hop and contemporary style.

In 2015, Joseph Toonga was the first recipient of DanceEast’s Choreographic Development Fund, enabling his continued artistic development. Joseph was commissioned to make To Be Felt, a spectacular celebration of live cello and dance which was performed at Orford Church in 2016, and as part of the Roman River Music Festival in 2017. DanceEast is proud to continue this relationship as commissioning partner of Daughter, Daughter – Before I Met You.
