The Elephant Man By Bernard Pomerance
The play follows the inspirational true story of the famous 19th century Londoner John Merrick – young, intelligent but notoriously known as The Elephant Man because of his terrible physical deformities. Despite his intelligence and gentleness, Merrick’s shocking appearance means he is shunned by the community and forced to scrape a living as a side-show freak attraction - until even this cruel industry leaves him abandoned and helpless.
But one day, he is taken in by eminent, progressive physician Frederick Treves and admitted to the London Hospital, Whitechapel. Thanks to Treves’ patience and care, Merrick’s confidence blossoms and he is eventually introduced to Victorian society.
As he slowly evolves from an object of pity to an urbane, witty favourite of the aristocracy and literati, is Merrick’s dearest wish fulfilled? Are people able to see beyond his monstrous facade to get to know the person within?
