The Chalk Garden by Enid Bagnold, a great English play that was originally produced starring Edith Evans and Peggy Ashcroft and fairly recently revived to great critical acclaim with Penelope Wilton starring.

The play is set in the mid 1950s and tells the story of the elderly Mrs. St. Maugham and her unruly and disturbed granddaughter Laurel. The mysterious Miss Madrigal is employed, without references, as a paid companion for Laurel.

A chance visit from an old friend of Mrs. St. Maugham, who happens to be a judge, is the catalyst for revelations which set the household in turmoil and changes everyone’s lives.
