Mendelssohn - Symphony No.3, ‘Scottish’
Opening the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2017 classical season at Wycombe Swan is Beethoven’s exhilarating Fidelio Overture, a tour de force of orchestral virtuosity and full of adventurous spirit.
Contrasting this will be Grieg’s Two Elegiac Melodies for String Orchestra; mournful and sombre Grieg took inspiration from the poems of Aasmund Olavsson Vinje which he ‘translated’ for a string orchestra.
The RPO’s acclaimed Principal Clarinet, Katherine Lacy, takes centre stage to perform Mozart’s ever-popular and charming Clarinet Concerto. Having recently been placed No.3 in Classic FM’s Ultimate Hall of Fame, this piece brings together expressive and cheeky melodies.
Closing the concert will be Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.3. Inspired by his visit to Scotland as part of his ‘Grand Tour’, Mendelssohn’s ‘Scottish’ Symphony evokes the wildness of the Highlands with the spirit of the Romantic era.
