The Sick Rose
How did physicians record and collate the symptoms of serious diseases before the advent of photography? Medical historian Richard Barnett details the often startling and painstaking illustrations of some of the deadly diseases of the day, like cholera, tuberculosis and diphtheria, increased by the growing urbanisation of the poor. With over 350 illustrations, he documents the frailty of the flesh and an urgent need of Victorian doctors to help and heal.
