The Cherry Orchard
In this popular tragi-comedy by Anton Chekhov a family is torn by powerful forces deeply rooted in history and the society in which they live. Their estate is in debt. Urged to cut down their beautiful cherry orchard and sell the land for holiday cottages, the family struggles to act decisively. With themes and struggles that resonate powerfully today, this masterpiece of the theatre is both sad and funny, presented with wit, humanity and warmth.
This lovely play, an anguished and heartbreaking love letter to a society in violent transition, has been performed all over the world.
Translated by Michael Frayn and directed by David Powley.
