Programme to include:
Richard Strauss - Till Eulenspiegel
Richard Strauss - Horn Concerto No. 2
Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 5
Conductor – Robin Browning
Horn – Roger Montgomery
This is an evening with arguably some of the best late Romantic works. Richard Strauss’s ‘Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks’ is a tone poem that follows the naughty adventures of Till, the German folk hero. The de Havilland Philharmonic will then perform his Second Horn Concerto with soloist Roger Montgomery, a much admired soloist, teacher and conductor across the UK.
The concert ends with Mahler’s Symphony No.5; one of Mahler’s most popular works that needs little introduction. The opening trumpet solo makes an immediate impression and the haunting ‘Adagietto’ movement was brought to prominence in the 1971 Visconti film Death in Venice. The Symphony takes us from despair, to anger, to love and finally joy.
