Ariadne Auf Naxos

Following his five-star Rusalka in 2016, director and designer Antony McDonald is back with a new production. In a large country house, two troupes of performers collide in an unfortunate double booking. Opera comes up against burlesque, and high ideals against a more ‘carefree’ approach… This playful opera is bursting with life and McDonald’s production promises plenty of style – and plenty of fun.

‘The beauty of Ariadne is that all art, either ‘high’ or ‘low’ – if you hold with that division at all – contains both tragedy and comedy. Ariadne’s themes are universal: two approaches not justto art but to life itself.’ Antony McDonald

Strauss’s sublime score flits between catchy comic turns, virtuosic coloratura and free-flowing lyricism. The international cast includes American soprano Mardi Byers, making her first appearance in the UK, Dutch tenor Kor-Jan Dusseljee and rising star and Jette Parker Young Artist Emily Edmonds. British opera legend Sir Thomas Allen is the Music Master and Jamie MacDougall is the Dancing Master. Brad Cohen, Music Director of Western Australia Opera, conducts.

Prologue sung in English, Opera sung in German with English supertitles.
