Two Russian Tales

Stravinsky Mavra
Walton The Bear

Stravinsky’s one-act opera of 1922 and Walton’s one-act ‘extravaganza’ of 1967 are based on two incisive and affectionate satirical comedies from the pens of Pushkin and Chekhov respectively.

Stravinsky’s rarely heard score is a wonderful amalgam of folk, jazz and traditional Russian styles, while Walton’s score is full of colour, wit and pastiche.
