Music From Mexico
This programme for strings, piano and percussion includes popular songs sung by Scotland’s Jamie MacDougall, composed by Manuel Ponce, María Grever and Agustín Lara as well as instrumental works by Silvestre Revueltas, Joaquín Gutiérrez Heras, Arturo Márquez and Javier Álvarez.
Mexican composers, often living abroad as exiles or as students, return to write music rich with traditional Mexican musical elements – folk song, danzón, bolero and danza. Manuel Ponce and Silvestre Revueltas both took refuge for some years from the confusion of the Mexican revolution (1910–1920) in Havana and Chicago respectively. A desire to study has also dispersed many Mexican composers to foreign parts – Paris, Bologna, Berlin, New York, London and California.
