A Punch & Judy stall on a Scottish seaside front. An older guy, who might be a Punch & Judy exponent, or just somebody reminiscing about a time in his life when you could see such things on a Scottish seafront? We don't know. What we do know is that this Punch & Judy stall is a magic box, full of characters from the old guy's childhood, and perhaps from his story between then and now.
He's remembering a particular summer, 1960, when he was 15 years old. He's still a child, but is going through the kind of boy-to-man stuff we all recognise; he's already disillusioned with Elvis, for betraying his Poor-White-Trash roots, his Girl-Back-Home is going off him for an older (16-year-old) guy, and his parents have dragged him off on holiday. In 1960 the old guy remembers, all things American were cool. Eisenhower was the President ("I Like Ike!"), and luckily, in light of the Elvis disappointment, there was Ray Charles and Chuck Berry and Bobby Darin.
