Varldens Band

Fifteen musicians, seven countries, three continents, one band. Världens Band performs a mix of folk and roots music from their native countries in a collision of cultures and a style that they have self-­branded ‘Transglobal Roots Fusion’.

Swedish melodies meet Scottish reels, English guitar accompanies Indian classical song, Galician pipes play Balkan melodies and the Senegalese kora blends with Mediterranean rhythms. The result is a unique and exciting blend of culture, personality and style. Made up of members of BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winners Last Orders, BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award nominees Rura and Swedish Folk Award winners Kolonien, alongside winner of the All India Radio Competition Carnatic Devotional singer Charu Hariharan, rising star of the Senegalese Griot tradition Abdou Cissokho and members of Swedish folk quintet Abra Makabra, Världens Band showcases music from all around the world, performed at its best.

All experts in their native traditional music, the musicians first joined forces in 2012 in Stockholm to share the folk music from their separate countries and to create new sounds under the guidance of Swedish folk legend Ale Möller. They have since carried out three highly successful tours of Sweden, playing all the major folk festivals, and one UK tour where they created an enthusiastic following after playing at Sage Gateshead, Musicport Festival, A Carefully Planned Festival and various university concert series, amongst other venues. Världens Band is currently working on their debut studio album, due for release in summer 2015 before their biggest tour yet from October – December 2015 throughout Europe.
