Julian Rachlin performs an all-Tchaikovsky programme; three works all written in the period following his misguided marriage to the fanatical Antonina Milyukova. His despair is clear, as he wrote of the introduction to his symphony: “This is fate, that fatal force which prevents the impulse to happiness from attaining its goal, which jealously ensures that peace and happiness shall not be complete and unclouded”.
