Mr Corvan's Music Hall
Mr Corvan’s Music Hall is a new musical play, written by top North East playwright Ed Waugh (co-writer Dirty Dusting, Waiting for Gateaux, Alf Ramsey Knew My Grandfather, Amazing Grace).
The first professional Geordie singer/songwriter, Ned Corvan’s story is both exhilarating and tragic. Born in 1827 (died 1865) Ned toured the North East performing songs that had resonance with working class people then and today. He also championed women, celebrated local rowing hero Bob Chambers and chronicled local events.
Raised directly opposite Sage Gateshead (behind what is now Newcastle Crown Court), Ned died of tuberculosis of the larynx aged only 37, but he left a brilliant legacy of at least 120 songs and was celebrated from Scotland to Yorkshire for his comedy lyrics, characters and virtuoso violin playing.
