Gareth Davies-Jones, The Felling Band

The Seam features singer-songwriter Gareth Davies-Jones performing original songs arising from his Arts Council England funded song-writing residency at The Mining Institute – Newcastle Upon Tyne’s remarkable literary cathedral to the coal trade.

Giving a flavour of the Institute’s historically renowned archive the show takes audiences through the lives and achievements of characters involved in the development and maintenance of the industry, the story of a subterranean ball to celebrate the striking of a new coal seam and even a song based around the contents of the 1953 2nd edition of ‘Practical Coal Mining’.

With stories, songs and visuals this a humorous, informative but always respectful journey through one of the hidden treasures of the North East.
