Music from the Sadler Partbooks
We are delighted to welcome back the vocal ensemble, Stile Antico in a programme of music which has great local significance. John Sadler was schoolmaster in Fotheringhay and Oundle from the 1540s to the 1570s and during that time copied large quantities of contemporary choral music. His principal set of partbooks, now in the Bodleian Library, has deteriorated over time to the point of illegibility, but thanks to the wonders of digital technology it is being restored for modern performance. Alongside polyphony by Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, this concert features organ improvisations and compositions from John Sadler’s lifetime.
Performance ends at approximately 9.15pm
6:30pm Pre-Concert Talk
Dr Magnus Williamson will give a pre-concert talk in the church about John Sadler, his partbooks and their connections with the lost collegiate church of Fotheringhay.
