The Rose Unfolds - Salon Season
A Festival Celebrating Pioneering Woman Playwrights of The Restoration 1660 - 1720.
'The Rose Unfolds - Salon Season' celebrates the work of women writers from The Restoration.
Hugely successful in their time, these 17th Century gems and the actresses they made famous have been neglected by history, their influence undervalued and the work ignored. Writing for both the newly built theatres of the West End and private Literary Salons, these women paved the way for generations to come, creating a new theatre culture in London.
The Rose aims to play host to these neglected plays and feel it is high time for them to be re-examined and performed, shedding light on the pioneering, experimental and successful work of 'The Female Wits’.
The Salon Season will bring together some of London's best female directors with all female casts to stage six little known Restoration plays, written for women by women. The staged readings will run for a two week season in September 2016, developing into a full festival to coincide with International Women’s Day and Women of the World Festival on London’s South Bank in 2017.
