"Freedom Festival celebrates, through artistic and cultural expression, Hull's independent spirit and historic contribution to the cause of freedom. The weekend-long festival returns to Hull's historic Fruit Market this September with an eclectic line-up of music, dance, street theatre, poetry, workshops and visual arts.
Freedom Festival is a family-friendly and largely FREE outdoor festival. Launched in 2008, its origins lie in the bicentenary celebrations of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire - the passing of the Act of Parliament was led by Hull's own William Wilberforce.
Artists performing this year include Kate Tempest, NoFit State Circus, outdoor spectacular Spellbound, Keelan Phillips, Ruby Turner, Roland Gift, Naturally 7, a community-led parade featuring a fun, paint-splattered finale - plus a very special opening ceremony which underlines the origins of the festival, bringing Hull's Old Town to life with a stunning trail of light and music."
