'Proud Songsters' - A Musical Celebration in Memory of John McCabe
John McCabe CBE, renowned concert pianist, celebrated composer and recent winner of the Ivor Novello Classical Music Award, passed away earlier this year at the age of 75. The City of Canterbury Chamber Choir, of whom John was President and a tireless supporter, are honoured to present this concert in memory of his life and genius.
Conducted by George Vass, the choir will perform some of John's compositions, a few of his favourite pieces and several specially commissioned works thanks to financial support from the John Armitage Trust.
The programme includes John's 'Proud Songsters' and 'Evening Watch', Byrd's 'Ave verum corpus', Purcell's 'Hear my Prayer', the spirituals from Tippett's 'A Child of our Time', Faure's 'Requiem' and five short commissions from some of John’s many composer friends – Cecilia McDowall, David Matthews, Robert Saxton, Deborah Pritchard and Thomas Hyde.
