It is a genuine pleasure to welcome back violinist, Melina Mandozzi, as our soloist in a year when we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yehudi Menuhin. Menuhin made the first recording of Elgar’s violin concerto (with Elgar conducting) at the age of 16! Following in his footsteps, Melina is the obvious choice to play the work with us as she studied with Menuhin from 1984-1989. Both the Nielsen and Dvorak works are being played by the FSO for the first time. The symphony was commissioned in 1884 by the Philharmonic Society of London and Dvorak wriote of it to a friend: "I am now busy with this symphony for London, and wherever I go I can think of nothing else. God grant that this Czech music will move the world!!". We look forward to it moving our small corner of England!
