Dario Fo’s glorious play, is a pointedly political farce highlighting the plight of ordinary Italian workers during the economic crises of the 1970s,
Luigi, Margherita, Giovanni and Antonia are neighbours in the same run-down apartment block. With the cost of living spiraling out of control the rent or utility bills have not been paid for months and eviction looms.
Things are so bad that all of the women in the area lay siege to the local supermarket and relieve it of its stock without paying. In the ensuing havoc their husbands and various suspiciously similar policemen are lead a merry dance.
'This is no gloomy agit-prop. Fo-faced farce wears a broad smile and proceeds at breathtaking speed' (Financial Times).
