A Man for All Seasons

Bristol's Kelvin Players are staging Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons - a timeless production exploring the themes of the role of the church, the power of the state and the rights of the individual.

Initially conceived and presented as a radio play before transferring to the stage in 1960, the critical and commercial success enjoyed by that first run on Broadway has yet to subside, with revivals of the play and a film adaptation delighting audiences ever since.

Set during Henry VII's first marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Bolt's story centres on the refusal of Sir Thomas More to support the king's wish to divorce his childless wife to secure the succession. In light of the supreme power of the king - not to mention More's friendly relationship with him - this stance is seen as a demonstration of More as the ultimate man of principle, doggedly doing what he believes to be right rather than what is politically or personally expedient.

Beautifully and meticulously costumed in period outfits, this ambitious production features a large cast of the Kelvin Players - some old hands, some fresh talent but all keen to bring this abiding tale of morality and political intrigue to life.
