The Gingerbread Lady by Neil Simon

First presented in New York in 1970, The Gingerbread Lady is a dark drama with comic overtones - a major departure from Neil Simons more light-hearted plays. It centres on cabaret singer Evy Meara whose career, marriage and health have been destroyed by alcohol.

Having just completed a ten-week stint in rehab, she returns home to the welcome of her daughter and some friends who wish to support her but also have their own problems. There is Toby, a vain woman who fears the loss of her looks; Jimmy, a gay actor, is in danger of losing a part; her devoted but anxious daughter Polly; and a worthless ex-lover Lou. Trouble looms as she attempts to host a party but falls off the wagon. Neil Simons wit and humour shine through his first attempt to play it straight.

This amateur production of The Gingerbread Lady is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD. a Concord Theatricals Company.
