Carla Rees, Nathan James Dearden, Royal Holloway New Music Collective

Through a series of concurrent performances across campus featuring renowned flautist, Carla Rees, College composer Nathan James Dearden, Royal Holloway New Music Collective, plus 8 new works by students from the Royal Holloway University of London Department of Music, the audience will journey through an outdoor installation of musical memos reflecting on Human Rights, Equal Rights and LGBTQ+ Rights before converging in the new Emily Wilding Davison Exhibition space.

Musical reflections will be based on speeches from Eleanor Roosevelt (‘The Struggle for Human Rights; 1948), Rory ‘Panti’ O’Neill (‘All the little things’; 2014), Elie Wiesel (‘The Perils of Indifference’; 1999) Elizabeth Nyamayaro (‘An invitation to men who want a better world for women’; 2015) and Martin Luther King (Honorary Doctorate Speech at Newcastle University; 1967).

The evening will end with a world premiere of Nathan James Dearden's you ARE determined for flute, actor and electronics in the Davison Building Exhibition space. This new work uses the text from Emily Wilding Davison's June 1912 journal entry referencing her imprisonment in Holloway Prison, north London.

They encourage the audience to meet at Founder's Square no later than 8:40pm. This event will take place after Dame Ethyl Smyth: Composer, Suffragette, Surrey resident in the Picture Gallery.
