The Rake's Progress
Stravinsky and W.H. Auden’s darkly sparkling operatic morality tale recounts the story of country lad Tom Rakewell, who strikes a bargain with the devilish Nick Shadow and abandons his true love for a life of pleasure and debauchery.
Looking back to the elegant classicism of Mozart’s operas, Stravinsky’s score is one of his most lyrical, witty creations, combining expressive arias with rousing choruses, and shot through by the composer’s unmistakable rhythmic verve.
Sir Andrew Davis directs the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in a special concert performance, with a cast of exceptional international soloists including American soprano Emily Birsan as Anne Trulove, respected British tenor Andrew Staples as Tom and bass-baritone Gidon Saks, praised for the power and drama of his delivery, as his demonic companion Nick.
