Symphonie Fantastique
A programme of
Berlioz Symphonie fantastique
Berlioz Lélio
Conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, one of the most revered British figures in the world of historical performance. Shining fresh new light on well-loved classics in performances that return them to the sounds and musical approaches that their composers originally intended.
He brings his period-instrument Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, celebrated for its authentic accounts of 19th-century music, to the Festival for two phantasmagorical works by Berlioz on Romantic passion and spurned love, joined by American tenor Michael Spyres, French bass-baritone Laurent Naouri and the much-lauded National Youth Choir of Scotland.
The kaleidoscopic Symphonie fantastique tells an opium-fuelled (and autobiographical) story of love, obsession and horror, while in its sequel, the visionary Lélio, the composer returns to life through the power of art.
